In costume class, our final was to design characters from Shakespeare's
the Tempest. It's a Shakespearean "comedy" but tends to be dramatic
in places, for those of you unfamiliar with the show. Don't have the
space for a summary here, but I encourage you to look it up if you've never
read it.
Anyhoo, this is Caliban, Prospero's servant. He's an angry dude, among
other things.
watercolor....don't laugh, it's my first try at watercolors!
arielcolor.jpg
This is Ariel, Prospero's spirit servant. In the show, the character
can be played either male or female, I went with female (obviously, heh).
Anyway, I wanted her to be very airy, and very pale. This is partly
to contrast heavily with the courtiers that pop on the island later on. There
is silver strands in her hair, and silver bracelets. In the play, she
'flashes.' -watercolor

Also in the play, she spends a great amount of time 'invisible.' I
wanted to create a tangible way for the audience to know when she is invisible
to the other characters, so I designed this cape for her, to resemble clouds.
This goes along with the airy spirit theme.
miranda.jpg
This is Prospero's daughter, Miranda. Innocent, but with a sense of
inner strength.

And her love interest, Ferdinand. This is the court dress he first
appears in.
watercolor, though it doesn't look it.
ferdinandbw2.jpg
He sheds layers as the play goes on, bringing him, visually, closer to the
19th century.

The transfortmation is complete. Cutie.

Prospero, the intimidating father of Miranda, and rightful Duke.
watercolor.

By the end of the play, I wanted him to be more grandfatherly, less scary.
stefano.jpg
And Stefano. The drunk butler.
and more watercolor.

Next we designed A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. If
you don't know the show....sorry. I'm not gonna summarize here, but
you should check it out! Muy funny. This is Miles Gloriosus. A
legend in his own mind.
panacea.jpg
One of the courtesan. ooooh.
domina.jpg
Domina, poor wonderful, fabulous Domina. She's a blast, and probably
one of my fave characters.
pseudolus.jpg
Pseudolus, with swatches! ooooh. For this project, I mostly
worried about color, so the texture is way off. But....yeah.
emma.jpg
In (my very first) costume class, our first assignment was to design two
modern characters of our own creation. So this is Emma. High school
journalist. Words are her weapon of choice. And all that jazz.
matt.jpg
And the other is Matt, an ACTOR. ha ha. Hollywood actor, totally
2D, who thinks he's totally hot stuff. So, to the premier of his new
blockbuster, he wears slinky mesh top, $1000 jeans, and a leather jacket.
Oh yeah.
annepiratecostume.jpg
Costume design for Miss Anne Bonney or Bonny or Bonn.....gotta love the
pirate life.
renncostume.jpg
Costume design for the Ren Faire. Never finished, but I enjoyed designing
it thus far.
turandot.jpg
I went to see the opero Turandot, by Puccini. It was awesome.
Truly awesome. I came straight home and sketched this. just
my view of her.
Turandot © um....someone, I'm sure...
bwtrumpet.jpg
I adore this design. Very Hollywood. It's the same kinda dress
as my prom dress, but the stripeys make all the difference ;-)
fairycostumedesign.jpg
See? She's like an upside down flower! SEE?? Hee-hee,
someday I'll make this. Lots of tulle. Lots. heh

Yes, ladies and gents, those are playing cards and poker chips! Fun,

Afore mentioned prom dress. I ended up making this with blue sparkly
fabric. It was very cool.
bwdress.jpg
I love stripeys!

Another MR design I did. Sorta a combo of the Black Diamonds and Pink
Diamonds costumes.
